Aurora Photography Classes

Hello friends! Soon we will be entering what is typically the best season for viewing aurora borealis – late winter/spring. Even though we are currently in a solar minimum and activity is lower, we still get some nice displays here in Alaska. I offer a class on nighttime/aurora photography every year at the Eagle River Nature Center and since it usually fills quickly, I’ve decided to offer two classes this year on consecutive Saturdays - March 16 & March 23. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about night sky photography, please follow the links for more information and to register. Cost is $75 and each class is limited to 10 people.

March 16: https://www.ernc.org/courses/nighttime-aurora-photography

March 23: https://www.ernc.org/courses/nighttime-aurora-photography-1

I can’t guarantee auroras but I can promise that you’ll learn some good techniques for exposing and focusing at night as well as tracking auroral activity.

Thank you and feel free to share!

Cuba Tour, February 2019

Hello and Happy Friday, friends! I've got a couple bits of exciting news to share. First, I have nailed down the dates and details for my photographic tour of Cuba, which is scheduled for February 3-9, 2019 (with an option to stay an extra two days to explore Viñales with me). I have gotten several inquiries regarding this tour so I am happy to have the plans laid out. We will be using KB Cuba Tours for the transportation, lodging, and guide services. This is the same company I traveled to Cuba with this past February and I happy to say they are offering us a great rate for this tour!! Follow the link at the bottom for details and how to arrange payment. Total cost for the week, which includes all transportation in Cuba, lodging & breakfast each day, photographic instruction and more is $1,795 with an early bird rate of $1,595 if you register before October 1, 2018. A $500 non-refundable deposit will secure your spot with the balance due by December 1, 2018. You can see my photos and videos of Cuba here: http://www.colintyler.com/travel/#/cuba-2018/

Second, after photographing a wedding this afternoon I am heading to the airport to explore a new part of the world! I haven't divulged the details yet so you'll have to stay tuned to see where I land this time.

Please share this information with your friends and anyone you think might be interested in exploring Cuba with me and experiencing the magic and culture of this magnificent Caribbean destination! As always, thank you for following along and supporting me in my adventures.

Gracias,

Colin

Wildflowers and Closeup Photograph Class

I never claimed to be a serious macro photographer but I truly believe that it takes a true artist to celebrate the ordinary. From time to time, I find myself looking for a new perspective on this mountain valley I call home. With wild roses, bluebells, and geraniums in full bloom, now is a perfect time to find beauty in small places. Speaking of which, I still have a few spaces left in this Saturday's class on closeup photography at the Eagle River Nature Center (Alaska). If you are interested, please click the image below for more details and registration. Cost is $75 and limited to 6 people. We will spend some time outside photographing wildflowers and then go over fundamental Photoshop techniques to get the most out of your images. I ask that participants have a basic understanding of shooting in manual mode and also provide their own laptop with Adobe software installed (i.e., CS or Lightroom).

Thank you and feel free to share!

Aurora Photography Class, March 2018

Last night's aurora photography class was a success! Thank you to everyone who attended. We had the best night of auroras this valley has seen in months, proving once again that timing is everything. I didn't get too many images since I was assisting people and making sure my attendees were capturing the display but I did take a few of everybody in action. We even witnessed the auroral arc that, for some reason, the Canadian scientific community has dubbed "Steve." I do not have another class scheduled for this season but I am always available for individual and group instruction.

Cheers!

Winter Photography Class

I had six students and very obedient yellow lab named Charlie at my winter photography class this past Saturday, which is pretty good considering most people (and dogs) were down at the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Dogsled Race in Anchorage. Of course, Charlie wasn't taking photos but she did make a great model and showed off her Zen-like focus and treat-catching skills.

Thank you to everyone who attended. My next class here at the Nature Center will probably take place in June. The aurora workshop on March 18 is full. I am also available for individual or group instruction, please message me if you are interested in a photography lesson.

Today's Photography Class

Just got in from leading an all-day fall photography workshop at the Nature Center. We had good weather along with nice colors and a great group of people. I truly enjoy teaching these classes and I hope my students gain a bit of knowledge as well. I offer at least one beginning class each season along with aurora photography classes in winter, so please stay tuned for the next session if you are interested.

Summer Photography Workshop

If you are interested in expanding your knowledge of camera functions and nature photography, I am offering a class on Saturday, June 25 from 9 am to 5 pm at the Eagle River Nature Center.  The first two hours will be spent in a classroom setting, where we will learn how to shoot in manual mode, we will then go outside for the rest of the day to put these principles to use in the field. Cost is $95 and limited to the first ten people who register. Please call the Nature Center at (907) 694-2108 to sign up.

Cheers,

April Aurora Class

Finally getting around to posting a photo from Saturday night's aurora photography class - I was on the road much of yesterday and arrived in Fairbanks last night. We had intermittent clear skies with a bit of aurora glowing behind the clouds. Everyone got photos and hopefully learned a few things in the process. Participants, feel free to share your photos in the comments.

Let's hope the aurora/weather forecast holds true while I'm in Fairbanks this week, tomorrow night could be good!
